Significant Risk

India, located in a seismically active region, faces a constant threat of earthquakes. The Indian landmass is situated in a seismically active zone, making it vulnerable to frequent seismic activity. The collision of the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates creates immense pressure and strain, leading to the occurrence of earthquakes. The Himalayan region, in particular, is highly susceptible to seismic events due to the ongoing convergence of the Indian and Eurasian plates. This poses significant risks to the population, infrastructure, and economy of India. Therefore, it is crucial for India to prioritize earthquake preparedness, mitigation, and response measures to safeguard its communities and ensure a resilient future.

Loss of lives

Between 1998-2017, earthquakes caused nearly 750,000 deaths globally, more than half of all deaths related to natural disasters. More than 125 million people were affected by earthquakes during this time period, meaning they were injured, made homeless, displaced, or evacuated during the emergency phase of the disaster.
